How do I get an ITIN?

We'll match you with a Certifying Acceptance Agent who can file it for you.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) lets you meet your U.S. tax obligations when you aren't eligible for a Social Security Number. Before you submit a request, it's worth reading the IRS overview of how to apply for an ITIN so you know what the process entails.

An ITIN application can only be handled by a Tax Pro who is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA). We have accredited CAAs in our network ready to help.

Starting an ITIN application

Log in and select Start new service. If you haven't submitted a job with us before, the service cards appear on your dashboard instead and there's no button to select first.

If your account offers it, you'll be asked whether you'd like to Start online or Start by phone. Choosing the phone option puts a representative on the line to set the request up with you.

Select Other services, then Start now, and choose the ITIN application service. Answer the questionnaire and confirm your quote at checkout.

If you need an ITIN alongside a tax return

Start a Tax filing request instead. The questionnaire asks whether everyone on the return has a Social Security Number or ITIN, and answering no adds the ITIN application to the same request.

What happens next

Once you're matched with a Tax Pro, upload a copy of the passport for each person who needs an ITIN. PDF is easiest for your Pro to work with.

After your CAA submits the application, the IRS takes several weeks to issue the ITIN. Your CAA can contact the IRS for a status update if it's taking longer than expected, and can upload the assignment notice to your job once it arrives.
