When you know, you know; but in case you don't know...
Independent contractors are normally individuals who work as they're needed and typically don't have a set schedule for a long period of time. This is different from part-time or temporary employment.
If you've received a 1099-MISC, then you're definitely an independent contractor. If you earned more than $600 from the same company, the IRS requires that business provides you a form 1099. Form 1099 simply lists how much they paid you. The company is also required to send a copy of that form to the IRS.
One drawback to being an independent contractor is that the company you work with will not withhold your standard payroll taxes (because technically, they're not your employer). Therefore, you will need to make estimated payments on a quarterly basis. The good thing, Taxfyle can definitely help you with these quarterly payments.
