State returns
When filling out our questionnaire for a tax job you can add what state you need to file returns for.
Taxfyle lets you indicate which states you need during onboarding, so your state tax return is completed with your federal return when your Pro files with the IRS. State tax obligations vary, and many taxpayers need to file in one or more states in addition to their federal return. Selecting your states up front gives your assigned Tax Pro the full picture, so they can handle your federal and state filings together.
Didn't select a state you need?
If you or your Pro realizes after submitting that you need a state return that wasn’t selected during onboarding, your Pro will notify Taxfyle so your engagement details are updated to include it. Your scope covers the state returns you need, so adding one won't change your price.
Selected a state you don't need?
If you selected a state during onboarding and it turns out you don't need to file there, let your assigned Tax Pro know. They'll confirm which states apply to your situation and update your engagement details. If it turns out you only need a federal return, your Tax Pro will handle that filing. This is most common if you live in a state with no state income tax (like Florida, Texas, or Nevada to name a few) so there's no state tax filing requirement.
Need a city or local return?
Some cities, counties, and school districts require their own returns on top of your state filing. These aren't selected during onboarding, so if you think one applies to you, let your assigned Tax Pro know. They'll confirm what's required and update your engagement details to include it.
Need a franchise tax return filed?
Some states require registered business entities to file a franchise tax return separately from an income tax return (most notably California, Delaware, & New York). If you think this applies to your business, let your assigned Tax Pro know. They'll confirm what's required and update your engagement details if it's not already included.
